This morning, I was listening to White Crosses on the train into manhattan. A toddler girl sat very close to me to try to eavesdrop on my headphones. I turned it up a little- and she began to try to sing along. It made my day.

Laura,
I just wanted to express both my gratitude for your music and my admiration for your courage in addressing your true identity head on.

No one is obligated to give us a thing in this world. Happiness is in the opportunities you seize and every one of them takes a measure of courage.

You are beloved and are an inspiration. Be well, be happy, be true.

Kirsten said...

We love you, Laura Jane Grace. Your name is as fluid and melodic to us as your incredible music.

Yo, Tom, in hopes you might come across this... You got me thinking tonight about how there's that cliche that everyone says: "Punk rock saved my life." Your music from back in the day is what I think of when I sheepishly mumble that, and in some way, it's entirely true. It was for a lot of us.

But what you did tonight, and will be doing by talking about this, is LITERALLY going to save kids' lives. It's fucking amazing. From an old fan...

Tom,

The respect that I've long had for you for staying true to your vision despite fan sniping -- and, of course, for choking some hater in a cafe -- reached its apogee when I read your recent news. You have such admirable character, and I wish you all the best.

you've always been an inspiration for me.
i've been slowly learning to be comfortable with the way i feel, in hopes of sorting out the confusion.
but last night you gave me a reason to truly believe.

it takes alot of bravery to be yourself, and i'm truly thankful that you are willing to put yourself out there in this way.

i don't know if you prefer tom or laura in the meantime, but either way, you are a huge inspiration, and i hope to one day be so brave.

with love and support,
thank you again!

All my respect and admiration for your brave decision. Rock on Laura Jane!!

I fully support and endorse
a transition from Against Me! to Against She!

I'm serious.

I'm not being facetious.

Against She! would be brilliant progression for the band.

Let me know and I'll get on a logo.

Hey Tom, I just wanted to let you know that you're an abomination. You've got serious psychological problems that you need to deal with, mutilating your body isn't the solution.

Laura--

I just wanted to say that I've been a fan of your music and your writing since I was 15. They mean a lot to me and they helped me through the confusing, oftentimes bittersweet transition from childhood to adulthood. I love your work and admire your courage, and I look forward to reading about your own transition as well.

You are an inspiration, to human kind. I'm not transgender, but everyone knows how difficult being true to yourself above all else can be and how it can eat you alive from the inside out if you don't.

Laura, Tommy, whatever you want to call yourself, whatever sex you want to be, you are an amazing human being and I love you. You have raised my spirits unimaginably today with your bravery and honesty.

You have been an inspiration to me since I saw Against Me! live in Birmingham 02 arena, 2 or 3 years ago. You had the lights on the crowd for pretty much all of the set, so you could see the faces of the people you were playing for, I looked into your eyes many times and saw beauty, depth and connection. Anyone else would see the same things. (I'm not usually this over the top, but you have brought it out in me today).

Huge amount of love and support to you today, and for the rest of your life, words cannot express.

ok. I'm done.

So looking forward to seeing/hearing you in your new form in the future, it's going to immense! Rock on!!!

Lesley said...

Laura, I will support you no matter what. Good luck. You are incredibly talented, male or female, please don't stop making music. I hope to see you in NYC in June... forgive me if I accidentally call you Tom. Love & support.

Nate said...

Good luck on your journey man! I hope that you find everything you are looking for in life. And thanks for being so open about it. You are helping more people than you could ever know.

Keep on rockin' on my friend. You are truly an amazing artist!

ok so im not sure how to leave a comment without posting on you most recent post..anyway, here it is.

Hearing the news of your recent truth only proves that life is not rigid. Not one way that we should all struggle to be. Thank goodness for you. Honesty at its most, and awakening my thoughts in the process. It’s a sad world to know the shame you’ve felt all this time, but know that you are the best example of this “one” life we are all given. You feed the trite expression that we must all “follow our hearts”. Hearts meaning our insides, the part that the world can’t see. Thank you for having the balls (no pun intended) to be so honest. You prove that authenticity comes from within and that’s why so many continue to plug your words into our stereos. We trust you, even though you have been living what some may call a lie. You are truly an artist and the aesthetic doesn’t matter, because if we would have listened closer… you’ve been telling the truth the whole time. Good luck and best wishes. Can’t wait to for the next album! You’ve given all your listeners so much and that will never change. I’ve embarrassed myself twice and told you that you inspired me to be a teacher… this is untrue, I wanted to teach prior to your music. Listening to your lyrics made me realize the kind of teacher I want to be. AND now more than ever! Although I cannot relate to your feelings, I respect them and I will keep this in mind when teaching a diverse group of children. We cannot choose how we are made but as a teacher I will always keep this in mind. Thank you again Laura, and see you at the next show.

Laura/Tom,

You are incredibly brave, and will undoubtedly being changing many peoples attitudes towards transgenders as a result of your courage. I apologize for the jerks who are gonna give you shit for this, and I know you're not doing this to be admired, but know that what you are doing is a good thing for music, and a good thing for mankind.

Can't wait to be a part of this journey and see how Against Me! grows as a result. Rock on, LJG.

N@ said...

Laura,

Congratulations on your decision! The amount of courage you have is astonishing!

As a fellow transgender person, I can say that although things will be hard, you have a much better life to look forward to. Don't listen to the hateful remarks that some people are posting, they are narrow minded and are totally unimportant.

Best wishes for your journey, and to your wife and child. :)

We're all humans, all we want is to love and be loved. Man or woman. It's hard to really know what we want, being confused on any levels, everyone has felt it one time or another.

Nothing will change the fact that you're incredible and your talent outgrow the rest. You've been one of my favorite artist for a long while now, I've always had so much respect for you as a person and for the music you make. I'm proud of who you are and that you decided to show your true self. It will be hard at times, it's undeniable, because people are afraid of the unknown, the differences.. etc just remember there's people who'll always support you no matter what. Everything you did have always been inspirational. Thank you for being who you are. Keep punk rocking, we need you!

Laura,
I've always felt incredibly close to you because of your work and music and it's been a privilege to have been able to speak to you about your music on the couple of occasions you came to Vancouver. Although it's going to be weird calling you by a different name, I know things for you will be infinitely harder. It took an insane amount of courage to do what you did by making this announcement and I have an everlasting amount of respect for you for doing it. You continue to inspire me through your music and your actions, which I want to thank you for.
I wish you the very best for the future of your family, band and personal well being. The promise I made that as long as you continue to make music I'll continue to buy still stands by the way.
Be strong.

Hey Tom, i don't really care about your sexuality but don't fuck with your body nan! You recognize it is a disease so treat it instead of juming into it. You can be happy a man's body.

For you to attack and judge someone for being who they truly are, is shameful and sad. It is people like you that make people like Laura Jane afraid to be who they are. You speak on what you know nothing about... Regardless of what you think, Laura is beautiful, brave and an inspiration to us all; which you probably will never experience unless you change your judgmental attitude. We could all learn a thing or two from her...
Don't be that hateful person...

Laura, I am a fan and always will be! You are truly amazing!! It takes guts for you to do what you are doing... There will be people that will try to break you down like the person that made this rude comment, but you are strong and fierce! You are loved! Support to you and your loved ones!

Hi Laura
I just want to say that your coming out deeply affected me. I too have struggled with gender dysphoria privately my whole life and after reading about/relating strongly to your experience I came out to my boyfriend and have been met with unwavering support. It feels strange coming to terms with transgenderism/possible transsexuality at 25, i'm sure you can relate, but I just want you to know that your honesty has strengthened me and encouraged me to stop censoring myself. I am transgender, I am punk as fucking fuck, and I am proud. Thank you for everything, and good luck on your journey. I'm trying to decide if going on T is something I want to do, but I'm taking baby steps for now. I would honestly love to meet you in person, pick your brain, and thank you. Against me! has been one of my favorite punk bands since like, '04 and I am so so so so so so sos fojsdigahj;jra; fucking happy for you and for myself. Thank you, my life has changed, and your candidness and conviction is about 75% responsible for that.

Thank you again.

I'm late to the party, only found you at The Cult gig in Orlando a few days ago. I have not been so impressed with any band since the days of The Alarm and The Waterboys (yes I am f*cking old now).My wife and I have been buying everything we can find by the band and trying to catch up on who you are. Here's hoping the band can hang through the changes to Laura, and that Laura will retain enough agnst to keep the insight to make such great music. I have to know if you are aware of Jayne County from the early days of punk..."Man enough to be a woman"...? I would love to see you cover the tune- it would be fitting right now. Thank you for such an amazing amount of passion in your music!!!!

When the folks over at Ergo Baby contacted me ergo baby carrier and asked if I’d been down for trying one of their ergo baby carrier australia, I couldn’t hit the reply button fast enough. Ergo has a great reputation for being one of the best ergo baby carrier sale on the market and I’d heard rave reviews from so many of mama friends.

Laura,

I'm not sure if you ever read these comments, but I don't have a twitter account, so I thought that I would post something here. Believe me, I don't throw these words around lightly, especially towards people I have never met, but... I wanted to tell you how inspirational you have been to me over the years, and how much of a beautiful person you are. No matter what happens, you will always have people who love and support you, and I hope that you and your family remain happy and strong throughout this journey. Hopefully I'll see you back in Ontario soon.
