Summer Tour 2011!

2 months and one week out on the road. 2 months and one week of what seemed like endless winter. I got used to it after a while. I started enjoying the bleak landscapes always outside the window. Home in Florida right now though and the sun is shining.
Pope broke his foot and ankle in Texas. He fell 20 feet off a latter while adjusting a par can. When Mike took the shoe and sock off his foot to have a look it was nothing short of grotesque already and the swelling had only just begun. Pope's still there in Texas where we left him at some kind of rehabilitation center or hospice. That was at the beginning of the two months, which by the end seemed like a lifetime ago or only yesterday. Had Pope only just left us or had we always been without Pope?
We were there in Madison as everything started happening, blocks from the capital, staying at the fabulous Edgewater Hotel and recording at Smart Studios. Smart's officially closed to the public, up for sale, was thankful that we got in there and have a chance to record something before it was really gone for good. We recorded two new original songs, one called "Russian Spies" the other called "Occult Enemies" while we were there. We also recorded a cover of the theme song for the TV show "One Tree Hill". It airs May 3rd. The two originals are going to be a 7" on Sabot Productions that will hopefully be out in time for summer. I'll keep you posted.
As always I'll be giving away two tickets per show via twitter each day on all of the upcoming tours. So if you want a chance to win follow me, @tommygabel.

One Tree Hill? I think I might need to stop reading your blog, sad times.

Can't wait to hear the songs again.

A theme song? Interesting. A gig is a gig is a gig is a gig.

Can't wait to hear the new songs, I'm also hoping you guys can squeeze a St. Augustine/Jacksonville show in while you're in Florida for Warped Tour!

Some shows in the midwest would of been nice...
I wonder how Black Me Out would sound electric?

I feel depressed about hearing about the One Tree Hill thing... I remember trying to watch it when it first came out. Self esteem went down... wayyyy down.

Why are you recording for One Tree Hill? Do you even like the show? I love your band, but when you sing about starting something new in your songs, do you even mean it? Cause signing to major labels, plugging crappy CW shows, being produced by Butch Vig, and touring with the Foo Fighters...you're not encouraging anything LIKE a new way, you're just promoting the typical band career path. At least The Clash never tried to change their music...

@punkrocker54

The Clash never tried to change their music, it just did. Music changes as musicians grow and if you can't get that through your head then piss off and stop taking up space on here.

More like... "can't tell if the One Tree Hill thing is a joke... if not, then I'm sure it'll just be awesome."

actually i think most of you have misunderstood.. they have recorded a version of the one tree hill theme song... basically for this season each intro (the song 'I don't want to be) has been recorded by different people each episode.. and the show itself features some amazing bands, so i wouldnt bag it before you understand it!

5am saint: Hey, I'm cool with bands changing their sound, but not to the extent Against Me has, specifically to sell records. It's Husker Du v. Replacements: Husker Du's last record is really good, albeit very different from their first. Replacements last record was different because they were trying to make money. There's a difference, not to mention that singing about better forms of music, then making records that sound like other bands, is not really practicing what you preach. I love Against Me, but it's depressing that Gabel's decided that capitalism is the way to live (and I am NOT an anarchist.

oh shit Tom, you've just won yourself another fangirl in the sea of millions. Sucks you won't be visiting Chicago any time soon.

@someonemaybe

I think you are misunderstanding what they were saying. They recorded a song "for" the show. I think that is the primary reason people are getting their panties twisted about. I'm glad that you like the show and the people who cover the original song over and over and over (and I'm assuming not every episode, perhaps every season), but I think for a lot of people who are AM! fans, it is a bit baffling.

Will everyone chill the hell out? Yes, the music has changed. I'd get sick of the same formulated song after an album, too. But AM! has always been different. Very few people can write songs that mean something nowdays... Songs you can feel and relate to. I will stand by Tom and the rest of the band indefinately because of what they stand for- a band who truly connects with their fans and respects them. Yeah, their new stuff isn't my favorite either, but they aren't selling out.
And I think them doing a cover of the One Tree Hill intro is actually pretty cool... Nice to see a real band getting some exposure.

I laugh at anyone who cries "sell out," downloads the band's music for free, and then goes to a job, works all day and expects to receive a paycheck.

The two Against Me!/Butch Vig albums are among my favorite discs of all time. Props to One Tree Hill for giving the band exposure to an even wider audience.
